چکیده

Network survivability is a critical issue for modern fiber-optic telecommunication networks. Networks with alternate routes between pairs of nodes permit users to communicate in the face of equipment failure. In this paper, we consider the following low-connectivity network design (LCND) problem. Given a graph G = (N, E) and a connectivity requirement oi ∈ (0, 1, 2) for each node, design a network at minimum cost that contains at least ost = min(os, ot) disjoint paths between nodes s and t. We present linear time algorithms for both nodeand edge-connectivity versions of the problem on series-parallel graphs. Due to the sparsity of telecommunications networks this algorithm can be applied to obtain partial solutions and decompositions, that may be embedded in a heuristic solution procedure as well as exact solution algorithms for the problem on general graphs.

Toughness of the Networks with Maximum Connectivity

The stability of a communication network composed of processing nodes and communication links is of prime importance to network designers. As the network begins losing links or nodes, eventually there is a loss in its effectiveness. Thus, communication networks must be constructed to be as stable as possible, not only with respect to the initial disruption, but also with respect to the possible...

ESP: pursuit evasion on series-parallel graphs

We study pursuit-evasion problems where pursuers have to clear a given graph of fast-moving evaders despite poor visibility, for example, where police search a cave system to ensure that no terrorists are hiding in it. If the vertex connectivity of some part of the graph exceeds the number of pursuers, the evaders can always avoid capture. We therefore focus on graphs whose subgraphs can always...

A Characterization of Undirected Graphs Admitting Optimal Cost Shares

In a seminal paper, Chen, Roughgarden and Valiant [7] studied cost sharing protocols for network design with the objective to implement a low-cost Steiner forest as a Nash equilibrium of an induced cost-sharing game. One of the most intriguing open problems up to date is to understand the power of budget-balanced and separable cost sharing protocols in order to induce low-cost Steiner forests. ...

Eccentric Connectivity Index: Extremal Graphs and Values

Eccentric connectivity index has been found to have a low degeneracy and hence a significant potential of predicting biological activity of certain classes of chemical compounds. We present here explicit formulas for eccentric connectivity index of various families of graphs. We also show that the eccentric connectivity index grows at most polynomially with the number of vertices and determine ...

On the Eccentric Connectivity Index of Unicyclic Graphs

In this paper, we obtain the upper and lower bounds on the eccen- tricity connectivity index of unicyclic graphs with perfect matchings. Also we give some lower bounds on the eccentric connectivity index of unicyclic graphs with given matching numbers.
